Class Reflection

before i came to this class i really didnt care about much we even were going to learn. but as time went on i started making some friends and started to like comming to class. i also was taught how to write papers with confidence. one major lesson that made me realize who i kind of am was the poetry unit. i went to a poetry club in the city with two of my friends from class. it turned out to be really exciting and fun. i plan on going back atleast once a month. im honestly going to miss this class and really enjoyed it throughout this semister.

Class lesson (Poetry)

Poetry is more than just words or rhymes comming out of peoples mouths. poetry is something that is spoken from the heart and something that has meaning. before this class lesson on poetry i did not think that at all. becuase of this lesson i now understand poetry alot better and can some what relate and possibly write my own poetry. during this year in class i was advised to go to a poetry club. at first i thought it would be a waste of time and not worth anything, but i was wrong. it helped me realize how much poetry is used in the world today whether its used with music or just a simple poem to explain how you feel about somebody or something.

Acceptance(Paper 2)

Respect, Courage, and your Beliefs are traits that are thought to make a person who they are. If someone doesn’t allow these traits, then they are thought to be not accepting you for who you are. Acceptance is clearly what is wanted in these three pieces of work. The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gillman, Hills Like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway, and the movie and story book, Cinderella by Walt Disney. In these three referenced literary arts the women were looking for Respect from their significant other, family and/or society. Additionally, all of these women showed their Courage by not allowing their Beliefs to be taken away.

In The Yellow Wallpaper, by Charlotte Perkins Gillman, she wanted nothing more than to be accepted by John. In this story, John is a symbol of society. This statement is made because during this time frame women were not allowed to do anything but take care of the children, house, and their husbands. John is considered society because he was her husband.

She wanted to be accepted for who she was, as referenced by the following quote:

“So I take phosphates or phosphites—whichever it is, and tonics, and journeys, and air, and exercise, and am absolutely forbidden to “work” until I am well again. Personally, I disagree with their ideas. Personally, I believe that congenial work, with excitement and change, would do me good. But what is one to do? I did write for a while in spite of them; but it does exhaust me a good deal-having to be so sly about it, or else meet with heavy opposition.” (p.316, 13-15)

She clearly enjoyed and wanted to write as a hobby and John (society) said she was sick. She felt that writing caused no harm to anyone and did not see his point of view. She was extremely courageous for even writing when no one else was around because if anyone would have walked in on her they would have thought that she was getting sicker and not better. They all felt her writing was an illness.

Another quote that showed that she was seeking acceptance was,

“I’ve got out at last,” said I, “in spite of you and Jane. And I’ve pulled off most of the paper, so you can’t put me back!” (p.328, 266)

This quote shows that she demands respect from society. This also shows how courageous she is because she clearly states I’m going to be who I am whether John (society) or her child cares or not.

In the, Hills Like White Elephants, by Ernest Hemingway, the young girl wants nothing but acceptance for her and her baby by the Man in the story. The man in this story symbolizes the American man for any young lady or woman in America. She speaks to this man whom she loves because the men of America don’t accept young girls having children, nor do they allow woman to get an abortion, regardless of their desires.

One quote that shows that she wants nothing but Respect, Courage and Acceptance is

“And if I do it you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me?” (p.115, 58)

In this quote she is asking the man what he wants, even though in her heart she has already made up her mind. She already knows that she wants to keep the baby. She wanted to make sure that he would still love her either way but worried his feelings would change if she kept it. This was another quote that showed that she wanted to be treated like any other man in America.

“Nor that isn’t good for me,” she said I know could we have another beer? “Alright but you’ve got to realize.” “I realize,” the girl said “can’t we maybe stop talking?” (P.116, 87-89)

This here clearly shows how she was courageous. She wanted to keep the child and by the statement made by the man you could tell that he really didn’t want her too. This is also showing that she wanted to be treated with respect; she didn’t want to hear what he had to say and ultimately wanted to be listened to and supported for her decision. When she felt he was not doing this she no longer wanted to talk, her decision was not being respected.

In Cinderella, by Walt Disney all Cinderella wants is to be accepted by her family. When you’re not accepted by family it is probably one of the worst feelings to have. Family is supposed to be there to accept, support and listen to you. They are the few people you should be able to rely on for acceptance. Cinderella did not have this.

One clip in this movie that showed how her family treated her poorly was when Cinderella’s family gets an invitation to the ball. Her step mother sees her excitement and walks in on her getting her dress ready. Cinderella does not see her step mother see her excitement and preparations. However, her stepmother did not want her to go because of her two daughters, Cinderella’s step sisters. Her stepmother later ruins her gown and provides her with a lot of chores to do that night so it would be impossible for her to attend the ball. Cinderella shows her courage when she leaves the house, forbidden by her stepmother and goes to the ball. She went with her beliefs and a little magic didn’t hurt either and went to the ball because she too was invited.

After the ball there was a lost shoe and the Prince went house to house to find the foot that fit in the shoe. To ensure Cinderella would be unable to try on the shoe, her step mother and sisters locked her in the bathroom. These actions show a lack of respect and jealousy. They were so intimidated by her beauty they wanted to ensure that she was unable meet the prince to receive her shoe and true love, even though they were not aware that she attended the ball. Cinderella believed she could have and deserved much more that she was given by her family. Cinderella longed for acceptance, respect and ultimately true love. She also knew that from that dance the prince would accept her for who she was.

In closing, ones Beliefs, Courage, and Respect for themselves enables one to flourish into the person they wish to be. These are just a few of the traits that these people displayed throughout their stories told. All three of these ladies went through adversity, whether it was from their male figure, society, and or family members.

(The Storm) by Kate Chopin

Attention: Censorship Committee

Dear Censorship Committee:

I am writing because of my disappointment with your choice not to publish “The Storm” and your choice of words in stating why you would not publish this work of art. I do not believe your committee has made the appropriate decision nor has the committee accurately portrayed this work of literature.

This literary work is something that should be published for the world to read as women’s goals and roles have changed. They no longer long to marry, have children, and obey their husbands. Women have been encouraged to pursue higher education and even a career. If women were encouraged to work during World War II and it was accepted by society why is it that your organization feels this work of literature “transgresses the virtuous, moral and social structure of American literature….”. Women have triumphed and finally have the attention of America. While equality is a long ways away, they are finally recognized as a more than just housewives, mothers and maids. They have proven that they are strong and America’s future can rely on them in times of need and for future growth within the economy.

I am concerned that your organizations committee is not open to the changes of the world and the expression of literary works that speak to the truth of how America and women have changed over the years. Instead of trying to print only “fluff” your organization should be focusing on the intelligence and strength that has shined through and the strides American women are making to help our society move into the future. .

I hope that you will seriously reconsider your words and decision not to publish “The storm” and the possible effects of not publishing this literary work on our society. Such a work of art can only increase the power and recognition women need to continue their fight for equality in the American workforce.

Class Lesson (Love and Romantisism)

love and romantisism was a big them in alot of the stories we read. i learned alot through most of the stories and what people go through and how love is in everyones every day life whether its a person or something like a pet or animal. it even went with the lesson of poetry which was my favorite lesson of all.

"To My Dear and Loving Husband" by Anne Bradstreet

Love For Someone (Paper 3)

There are many different ways of showing love, whether it’s towards someone or something. Most ways of showing love outside of affection is through music or poetry. It has become an art that people can share with friends and loved ones to show and/or prove their love for someone, or something. Poetry and music also allow you to speak as you want, not as someone else wants you too. These two poems, “Alzheimer’s” by Kelly Cherry, and “My Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet talk about love for someone that once loved and /or still do love. The song “Mocking Bird” by Eminem is another art form in which he shows love for someone who is close to him.

The titles of each of the poems and the song really don’t seem like they compare at all, but when you really think of the words in the titles you can tell that there is true meaning and a situation in the story they tell. The first poems title explains it’s self, “My Dear and Loving Husband.” Clearly this is the wife of a man who clearly cares for him and wants to show her love to him. The other two you have to actually understand the meaning of the word and realize the situation. In the “Mocking Bird” this song is about his love for his own daughter who has struggled seeing him and also gone through a lot with her mother. And in the other poem “Alzheimer’s” there is a brother and/or sibling that is telling the story of how the father or brother has come home to a place he has lived his whole life but only remembers what belonged to him and not his loved ones, including his wife.

Each poem and/or song usually has its own situation if not a setting. In “Alzheimer’s” the situation is a man who lost most of his memory and therefore his love for everyone as well. The setting is where he has lived most of his life in which he put so much effort into making changes for the good. In “My Dear and Loving Husband” there really isn’t a situation at all; it kind of just has a set mood. It is as if she just wanted to explain how she felt and how much she loved her husband that clearly loves her back. Finally, in the song “Mocking Bird” the situation is how the daughter never sees her father that much and how the mother tells her that the father is nothing but trouble and how supposedly he doesn’t care for her. He wrote this to mock the mother and also show his undying love for his daughter.

In “My Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet the feelings that are felt as reading this poem are feelings that you could only compare to if you ever have been in love. A couple lines in this poem that made me feel the passion in what she wrote was, “I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold” (Bradstreet 5) “That when we live no more, we may live ever.” (Bradstreet 12). The first line just shows how her love for him is worth more than anything in the world and that money or anything couldn’t replace that for her. And the second line just makes you feel her passion and love for him because she knows that he is the only man for her whether it’s in the life time they are in now or the afterlife.

In “Alzheimer’s” by Kelly Cherry, she makes you feel the pain that everyone in the poem is feeling because the old man doesn’t know who any of them are. Some lines that made this feeling were, “Thing he must do, now that he is home, is decide who this woman is, this old, white-haired woman standing here in the doorway, welcoming him in.” (Cherry 26-29) that just hits you. Makes you think what if my mom or my own wife and/or husband came home one day like that. It would tear me apart just like this person who wrote the poem felt.

In “Mocking Bird” by Eminem, he clearly shows that he is hurting from not seeing his daughter that much and being able to take care of her. A couple lines that show the mood of most of this song and how he feels is, “I'll never forget that Christmas I sat up the whole night crying Cuz daddy felt like a bum, see daddy had a job

But his job was to keep the food on the table for you and mom.”(Eminem 53-55) you could only feel this if you have kids and money issues but the way he explained it made you feel like you was you and not him. You could also feel his pain by the way he sings this.

In “My Dear and Loving Husband” a couple words and or lines that helped set the tone and mood were, if ever two were one, then surely we (Bradstreet 1). I prize thy love more than whole mines of gold (Bradstreet 5). Then while we live, in love let's so persevere (Bradstreet 11). That when we live no more, we may live ever (Bradstreet 12). In “Alzheimer’s” a couple words and or lines that helped set the tone and mood were, a crazy old man (Cherry 1) remember, emotion and welcoming. And, in “Mocking Bird” crying, tears, prayers and nightmares.

All three of these pieces are very touching and have a lot of meaning. They all show love towards a loved one who they truly care about. And they also make you think about your loved ones and find the best in them because you never know what could happen. Just like in “Alzheimer’s” by Kelly Cherry and/or “Mocking Bird” by Eminem.

Class Lesson (idealism)

before the lesson on idealism, i never really thought about it but, everything these days has to deal with idealism. whether we realize it or not, everyone shoots for perfection. no matter how close we are to being perfect you still always try and make yourself better. for example people who go to the gym, or people who get plastic sergury.
